Red Queens and Increasing Returns

When deciding to obtain a DVD for my science fiction assignment in Module 4, I checked with our local movie rental stores only to find that the one copy of the movie was rented out. I found that amazing and slightly hard to believe. I had not seen this movie before but I Googled it and found it interesting. Therefore, on a hunt to locate this movie, I found it offered on Netflix.

Thornburg (2008) describes increasing returns as two innovations that hit the market at about the same time but by chance, one technology stays locked in and drives the other to extinction. When we look at the competition between DVD’s and video on demand, we will see that this is an example of increasing returns. Before there were video on demands, there were DVD’s. The two of these entities gained popularity at two different times. While DVD’s only required minimum gadgets, such as a DVD player and a television or a computer, video on demand requires much more.

Such sites as Netflix and other sites require a high speed Internet connection as well as a computer thus making the idea of video on demand more challenging and less desirable. With this notion in mind, video on demand such as Netflix began to become more marketable. They started offering viewings of their movies on the Internet as well as the option to mail DVD’s to the house for a fee. In addition, despite the late charges that can occur at a movie rental place, such video on demand sites like Netflix, allows its users to keep their DVD’s as long as they would like with no fee.

DVD’s and video on demand adds entertainment and selection to the video viewing experience. It offers an alternative to going to the movies. Therefore, when we look at McLuhan’s tetrad, it would fall under the enhancement sector. DVD’s and video on demand allows viewers to watch movies at their own pace and as many times as they want.

The Disruptive Power of Second Life

We are living in a world where technology is ruling every aspect of our being. From the advancement in transportation to the advancements in the way we communicate, technology is growing more and more smart, advance, and complex making our life simpler and intricate. When it comes to the idea of if Second Life’s power being a disruptive technology, it depends on the way a person looks at it. Are we considering Second life power disruptive because of way it demands attention and wipes out its current competition or do we consider it to be disruptive on the bases of the skills and attention the new technology demands?

Second life technology replaced many things. From the way we communicate to the way we learn, second life has made life and living simpler. There is no need to communicate face to face with others. Second life has made it possible to communicate with advanced cell phones, video chatting such as Skyping, etc. In addition, trips to the library are not in high demand. E-readers and Nooks have been created to enhance learning and reading in the palm of an individuals hand.

Technology is changing rapidly. It seems as if as the days past, technology becomes wiser and more advance thus replacing its existing competition. Therefore, it is my belief that it will not take years for Second Life to show it other face.

Second Life has forded many opportunities in the education realm. Online classes have taken flight. Classrooms are becoming more and more technological savvy by blogging, podcasting, etc. Many schools are reconstructing their curriculums to cater to the demand of technologies many changes. Therefore, preparing students for a 21st century world should be the vision and goal for every school.

Ryhmes of History Technology

“The future will be like the past, only with cooler toys.”

As I think about the technologies forded to us today, I must embrace the fact that technology is repeating itself. As a child, I was often entertained by video games. I loved them. Seeing my interest in these video games, my parents would pull out their favorite video game, the Atari in which they loved playing pack man on. I loved playing the Nintendo where I spent hours playing Super Mario Brothers and a duck game that had a play gun to shoot with. AS the years passed, I saw technology becoming more and more advance. The development of the Sega Genesis, Game Boys, the Nintendo DS, the Xbox, to the Playstation, all rapidly took over the video game market. Each year, something new was being invented and introduced to the world. Now the Wii is taking over the market.

With analyzing the advancement of each of the video game advancements, all are replicas of each other. When you look at the very first, the others were created to make the entertainment more advance and more worthwhile, the goal for the years to come. The video game world has shown that the future gadgets are replicas of the past, except they are faster and cooler.

Emerging Technologies Tetrad

Nook E-Reader

As agreed with my learning community, we decided to embark upon the Nook E-Reader, a newly emerged e-book reader. The Nook is a multicolored touch screen device that offers a keyboard for you to browse books. In addition, this device has Wi-Fi, lots of storage space, and an MP3 player. Barnes and Nobles allows Nook users the opportunity to have access to their online bookstore, newspapers, and magazines.

Enhances: The emerging of this technology is beneficial in several ways. This technology allows its users to carry and store a plethora of information in one gadget. In addition, this technology will enhance literacy in society. Many individuals are more willing to partake upon something that is not of the norm. For instance, reading a book is the norm and many may grow bored with this. However, reading on a gadget such as the Nook will pose to be more interesting thus heightening the will to do so. The availability of Wi-Fi allows the users of this technology the opportunity to access the Internet, share books with others, and listen to music.

Obsolete:
The creation of the Nook gets us one step closer to ridding ourselves of paper. The Nook is replacing print material. No need to carry books, magazines, or newspapers around when it can be housed in a gadget that can fit in your hand. In addition, the standard MP3 players and IPods are fading away due to the capabilities of this technology to offer these features.

Retrieves/rekindles: In the past scrolls were used for learning. From alphabets, to writing, to telling stories, scrolls were used as a means of transporting and creating information. The same was with the Nook.

Reverses: This emerging technology will cut down the visits to the library. In addition, it will cut down on reading print material.

Identify an Emerged Technology

Mimio

http://rmtc.fsdb.k12.fl.us/tutorials/whiteboards.html

• Identify a current technology that has emerged in the last few years that shapes learning or productivity in your industry.

The Mimio turns any classroom whiteboard into an interactive whiteboard. It has approximately the same instructional potential as a SmartBoard, in that the teacher can create full-class, interactive lessons with documents, maps, templates, and the Internet. The Mimio is connected to the teacher’s desktop and projected with an LCD. In essence, the classroom whiteboard then becomes “the computer monitor.” The writing tool, which is similar to a marker, becomes “the mouse.”

• What problems or challenges have been associated with this technology?

There are many issues or problems that have been associated with this product. The product is very expensive for my districts liking. Therefore, only one of these was purchased for each school. This innovation is located and housed on a rolling art for the quick access for each of the teachers. With this in mind, there is always a waiting list for teachers to utilize this innovation in their classrooms. In addition, proper training was not forded to the teachers to adequately utilize this innovation without careful supervision from the tech department or someone with expertise. Utilizing this product sometimes becomes more trouble than actual using it.

• What societal need does it meet, and what are its benefits?

Living in a technological era, many students are technological enhanced way beyond many adults. This must be true in order for these students to compete with other students globally. With this in mind, as educators, we must educate these students according to their interests while giving them the essential skills needed for their next academic or career level. The use of this innovation does exactly this, educate students while preparing them for the future.

• What would make this technology even better, avoiding the pitfalls you identified?

Extensive training for this product will be a major plus. It is impossible for educators to learn how to utilize and implement a product effectively with one training session. Therefore, several sessions would be needed as well as hands on experimenting. Modeled lessons and monitoring will be a must in order for educators to learn to use this innovation effectively. In addition, purchasing this product for each of the classrooms would make this technology even better. No waiting in line! Technology at our fingertip and effective training would cure the current pitfalls that surround this innovation in my school.
